With its direct access to northern and southern seas and also development of aquaculture industry, Iran produces 1,150,000 tons of various types of fisheryproducts, total of which hit both domestic and foreign consumer markets.

After sanctions relief, not only the country succeeded in transferring technical knowhow and knowledge in the field of culturing shrimp and trout, but also it managed to promote feedstock for aquatic animals and resort to new fish farming methods including fish breeding in cage and technologies for increasing production volume, he maintained.

In the 11th and 12th governments dubbed ‘Hope and Prudence’, giant steps were taken to invest jointly with the developed and advanced countries in the field of transferring technical knowhow and knowledge into the country, Salehi emphasized.

Last year, about 125,000 tons of fisheries’ products, valued at more than $500 million, were exported to target countries, he observed.

In addition, over 16,000 tons of shrimps, valued at $100 million, were exported to the target countries including Persian Gulf littoral states, Middle East and Southeast Asia in the past Iranian calendar year in 1396 (ended March 20, 2018), he said, adding, “export of shrimp accounted for one fifth of total export value of fisheries in the country.”

Head of Iran’s Fisheries Organization Hassan Salehi once again reiterated that if US withdraws from JCPOA, Iran’s fisheries’ industry will not hurt significantly.
